Rodney Basil Price, known professionally as Bounty Killer, is a Jamaican dancehall DJ whose influence extends well beyond his own recordings. Raised in Kingston after spending his childhood in communities including Riverton City and Seaview Gardens, Price developed an early interest in music through his father's sound system. At fourteen, he survived a stray gunshot during political violence, an event that inspired the stage name Bounty Killer and shaped many of the themes explored in his recordings. He first performed under the name Bounty Hunter before joining King Jammy's Recording Studio, where his professional recording career began in 1992 with the single "Coppershot."
His recording catalog includes "Roots, Reality & Culture," "Down in the Ghetto," "My Xperience," "Next Millennium," "5th Element," and the "Ghetto Dictionary" albums, while singles such as "Coppershot," "Defend the Poor," "Book Book Book," and "Babylon System" became staples of dancehall. Grammy recognition for "Ghetto Dictionary: The Mystery" and commercial success on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart further strengthened his international profile.
Beyond his solo work, Bounty Killer has played a pivotal role in shaping modern Jamaican music through mentorship. As founder of Scare Dem Crew and The Alliance, he helped introduce or advance the careers of artists including Vybz Kartel, Mavado, Busy Signal, Elephant Man, Cham, and Aidonia. His collaborators have included Barrington Levy, Junior Reid, Busta Rhymes, The Fugees, Jeru the Damaja, Raekwon, Mobb Deep, Wu-Tang Clan, and No Doubt. That last partnership produced "Hey Baby," which earned Bounty Killer a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group in 2002, one of the most prominent crossover moments in dancehall's mainstream history. He also received a Grammy nomination for "Ghetto Dictionary Volume II: Mystery," and in 2012 was recognized by Guinness as the Greatest Dancehall Icon. The STAR People's Choice Award named him Deejay of the Year in 2013.
Across more than three decades, Bounty Killer has remained an influential recording artist, cultural figure, and advocate for underserved communities. His contributions as a performer, mentor, and label founder have earned him the enduring nickname "Poor People's Governor" and secured his place among the architects of contemporary dancehall.
